Renewing Our Commitment

Series: Renewing the Church's Mission

Summary

As John’s account of God’s words to the churches concludes he has some strong words for the church in Laodicea. It was a church that struggled with retaining a strong, fresh love for God. They didn’t understand themselves and needed correction. We can be proactive and learn much from this passage as it is so easy for us today to be lukewarm in our love and blind to our own needs for God to do His good work in our lives.

  1. Admit your desperate need (3:17).

  2. Consider the consequences of complacency (3:15-16).

  3. Let Jesus Christ meet your deepest need (3:14, 18).

  4. Receive what Jesus Christ has to offer (3:19-20).

  5. Be encouraged by Jesus’ promise (3:21-22).

Takeaway: To be half-hearted, complacent, comfortable and lukewarm is to reveal that we aren’t even Christians, and to be so distasteful to Christ as to be in danger of rejection. But to be whole-hearted and committed is to be given the privilege both of having community with Christ now on earth and reigning with Him in heaven. Will you open the door to Him, right now, or keep it shut to Him? Which will it be?
