A Fresh Vision of Christ

Series: Renewing the Church's Mission

Summary

  1. Introduction: Some background.

    1. A revelation to the church. The recipients of Revelation are “seven churches in the province of Asia” (1:4, 11).

    2. A revelation through John. The Apostle John had been banished to the island of Patmos because of his preaching. The more we are committed to Christ, the less popular we are likely to become in secular society.

    3. A revelation about Christ. A church facing challenging issues needs a fresh vision of Jesus. His titles, achievements, and portrait (vss.9-20) reveal Jesus as the exalted, sovereign Christ, able to meet all of our needs.

  1. Description: The vision.

    1. Our King. Jesus is called “Son of Man.” Taken from Daniel’s prophecy (7:13-14), the expression emphasizes Jesus’ kingly rule and authority over us.

    2. Our Priest. Jesus wears the robe of the high priest. There is no more need for animal sacrifices because this priest shed His own blood once for all.

    3. Our Wisdom. “His head and His hair were white like wool,” suggesting divine wisdom (Dan.7:9; James 1:5).

    4. Our Power. The description of Jesus’ eyes (Heb.4:13), feet, voice (Ezek.43:2), mouth (Heb.4:12) and face (Heb.1:3) draw attention to His power and strength.

Takeaway: This awesome figure, Jesus Christ, is viewed as standing in the midst of our church. He knows us and our needs intimately. He’s here right now…calling us to greater devotion in our love, faithfulness, concern for truth, purity, authenticity, outreach, and commitment. How will you respond?
